When does ovulation occur after miscarriage?

Pregnancy loss is different for every woman. Most women need time and support to recover before they try to conceive again. Others want to get pregnant as soon as possible. The time of ovulation after a miscarriage varies from woman to woman. This is also related to previous menstrual cycles. For example, women who had irregular cycles before pregnancy, may find that cycles remain irregular. After a miscarriage, the menstrual cycle restarts and most women have their period in 4-6 weeks. However, it may take several months for the cycles to return to normal, or as they were before the miscarriage.

After the miscarriage, women will experience some bleeding. The first day of bleeding is the first day of the new menstrual cycle. The bleeding continues for about a week. Ovulation can occur in about 2 weeks in this new cycle. Ovulation usually takes place on the 14th day of the cycle, in women with regular periods (28 days on average). According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), women will ovulate 2 weeks after a miscarriage, if it occurs within the first 13 weeks of pregnancy. But if the miscarriage occurs at a later stage of pregnancy, the cycle will be much longer until it returns to normal.

As we mentioned, miscarriage restarts the menstrual cycle. So, for women who want to get pregnant again, once the bleeding associated with the miscarriage is over, they should start using ovulation tests. These will help them reschedule intercourse for the next conception.

When is it safe to conceive again?

When a woman will try to become pregnant again is a personal decision. The World Health Organization (WHO), however, advises you to wait six months, to reduce the risk of low birth weight, maternal anemia, and preterm birth.

Here at HomeTest, we advise women to wait at least three months, to boost their chances of having a healthy pregnancy. If a woman's body is not ready to support a pregnancy again, she risks of having a miscarriage again. Also, if the endometrial has been scraped, the woman must wait for the tissues to heal and the endometrium lining to thicken again. So, it takes time for the uterus to be restored and to become strong and healthy again. Generally, be aware that after endometrial scraping, conception is safe after approximately three normal cycles. This is not the case for biochemical pregnancies, where women can conceive immediately after the next period.

When you feel physically and emotionally ready for pregnancy after a miscarriage, talk to your doctor and seek appropriate guidance.
